Major Crimes Unit

The Major Crimes Unit of the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office is responsible for investigating all major crimes that occur within Forsyth County - this does not include Property Crimes. Property Crimes investigators currently fall under the North & South Patrol Divisions. Investigators within the Major Crimes Unit are tasked with providing follow-up investigation on cases where a major crime has been committed but no arrest has been made, as well as initiating new cases independently. Cases involving violent acts and/or death, sexual assault, threats, etc. are classified as Major Crimes.

These detectives work the entire county and are centrally located for all county residence at the “Old Courthouse”, which is now Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office headquarters. These detectives work a multitude of crimes including homicides, sexual assaults, domestic violence, child abuse and molestations, robberies, aggravated assaults and aggravated batteries and any other person’s crimes.

This unit also includes some very specialized work with computer crimes and computer forensics. Computer forensics entailing the information obtained in the computer that only highly trained individuals working with special computer software are able to do. These crimes include child pornography.

All investigative units work a 40-hour week, but are on-call for the remainder of each day to investigate any crime that occurs within our county in order to maintain the safety of our citizens.

Crime Scene

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Unit is responsible for the documentation, processing and the collection of evidence at crime scenes within the county. The crime scene unit allows the detectives of the property crimes unit, major crimes unit and deputies to have access to advanced crime scene processing, latent print development techniques, fingerprint comparisons, IAFIS operations, certain drug examinations, expert court testimony, and advanced photographic documentation techniques. The crime scene unit also provides assistance to other surrounding agencies in the areas of crime scene processing, latent print development, and comparison. The members of the crime scene unit are trained and are Georgia POST certified Crime Scene Technicians.

Property & Evidence

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office Property and Evidence Section has several functions; some of which includes receiving, storing, and recording property and evidence, ensuring all property, evidence, and impounded vehicles are preserved and accounted for according to federal, state, and local law regulations, and with the established departmental policy. Various types of evidence is submitted into the evidence section; some examples are blood/urine kits, large sums of money, documents, drugs, weapons, vehicles, and other items that may be confiscated by law enforcement officials in criminal cases, as well as found and safekeeping property. The Evidence Technicians are tasked with making sure all items are properly identified, documented, and packaged for safety and secure storage. Some of their other duties include: assisting at major crime scene(s) as needed, running firearm serial number(s) through ATF and GCIC, verifying criminal history report(s) prior to releasing weapon(s) to the public, notifying known owner(s) of found property or safekeeping property received, compiling case information into an Exhibit A for a returned signed court order for multiple judicial court systems to purge abandoned property, as well as conducting inventory audits, which are performed routinely and on a regular basis to ensure the security and integrity of the evidence room. Currently, the Property and Evidence section is open between the hours of 8:30am to 5:00pm, Monday through Friday.
