Fingerprinting

The Permits and Ordinance Unit fingerprints citizens for the following: child adoption, alcohol permits, firearms permits, firefighter pre-employment, real estate license and other Government Agencies. However, we do not transmit the fingerprints for other agencies.

Criminal Histories

We also run Criminal Histories for the following:

  • Employment ($15.00 Fee)
  • County Contractors ($20.00 Fee)
  • Alcohol ($20.00 Fee)
  • Adoption ($15.00 Fee)
  • Massage Permits ($25.00 Fee)
  • Door to Door Solicitors ($20.00 Fee)
  • Real Estate Licenses ($15.00 Fee)
  • Personal Requests ($15.00 Fee)

A fee of shall be paid to the Sheriff's Office to process the Criminal Histories. Applicants are required to provide a valid government issued photo ID (state ID, driver’s license, passport, etc.).

*The forms of payment accepted are cash, MasterCard and Visa.

Alcohol Serving and Sales Permits

Forsyth County has over two hundred locations permitted by the Board of Commissioners to sell alcoholic beverages. Each licensee of those establishments are responsible for complying with state law and county ordinances. The Permits and Ordinance Unit deputies conduct undercover sting operations on a regular basis to deter alcohol sales to minors.

Alcohol Sales Permits are issued by the Forsyth County Department of Planning and Community Development. Applicants shall first visit the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office located at 100 E. Courthouse Square, Room 135, Cumming, GA 30040 to obtain a background check. A fee of $20.00 shall be paid to the Sheriff's Office to process the background check. Applicants are required to provide a valid government issued photo ID (state ID, driver’s license, passport, etc.) Applicants should take the background check to Planning and Community Development located at 110 E. Main Street, Suite 100, Cumming, GA 30040. A fee of $25.00 shall be paid to Planning and Community Development for the issuance of the sales permit.

Alcohol sales permits will be issued at the Planning & Community Development office at the times listed below:

Mondays 8:30AM - 5:00PM
Wednesdays 8:30AM - 12:30PM
Fridays 8:30AM - 5:00PM

*Permits will not be issued on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Residential and Business Alarms

Permits & Ordinance Unit deputies receive and process all false residential & business burglar/panic/hold-up alarms. For the first two violations of any portion of County Ordinance section 50-33 within a calendar year at any premises there shall be no penalty assessed. The first and all subsequent false alarms to a premise within a four-hour period shall be considered as one violation. The sheriff's office will issue a written warning, via personal service or certified mail, to any responsible person at the premises for the first two violations during a calendar year.

Firearms Permits

The Permits and Ordinance Unit fingerprints citizens that are applying for a Georgia Weapons Carry License. Applicants must first visit the Forsyth County Probate Court, located at 101 East Courthouse Square Cumming, GA 30040.

New applicants must be at least 21 years of age (unless an exception applies) and be a resident of Forsyth County. He or she must present identification in an approved form, and submit a $69.75 fee payable in cash only to the Probate Court of Forsyth County.

Different requirements exist for timely renewal applications, and for applications to replace lost or destroyed licenses originally issued by Forsyth County Probate Court. Contact the Probate Court office at 770-781-2140 for more information.

Animal Control Unit

Animal Control Unit deputies enforce state law and county ordinances pertaining to domestic animals. These laws and ordinances range from failure to vaccinate, animal at large, animal cruelty, barking dogs, dog bites and dangerous/vicious dog classifications.
