Chief Grady D. Sanford, Jr.

Chief Grady D. Sanford, Jr. serves as the Chief Deputy for the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office in Forsyth County, Georgia.

Chief Sanford began his career in law enforcement in May of 1984 when he was employed as a Deputy Sheriff with the Gordon County Sheriff's Office until taking a position with the Fairmount Police Department in December of 1986. He served as a Police Officer until beginning his career with the Georgia State Patrol (Georgia Department of Public Safety) in July of 1987 as a radio operator at Post 43 Calhoun. In 1988, Chief Sanford attended the 63rd Georgia State Patrol Trooper School and was assigned to Post 3 Cartersville after graduation. In 1992, he transferred to Post 43 Calhoun and worked there until his promotion to Corporal at Post 9 Kennesaw in 1997.

After being promoted to Corporal, Chief Sanford progressed through the ranks being promoted to Sergeant at Post 29 Cedartown in 2000; to Sergeant First Class (Post Commander) at Post 43 Calhoun in 2001; to Lieutenant (Assistant Director of Training) in the GSP Training Division, Georgia Public Safety Training Center in 2003; and to Captain (Troop Commander) in Troop B in 2011. Chief Sanford was appointed the Division Director of the Capitol Police Division in July of 2012, a post he held until being appointed the Troop Commander of Troop A in September of 2014. He also served as the State Commander of the Georgia Department of Public Safety’s Honor Guard. Chief Sanford retired from the Georgia State Patrol on December 31, 2016 and joined the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office January 01, 2017.

Chief Sanford holds an Associate of Science degree and a Bachelor of Science degree (Criminal Justice) from Thomas University, and a Masters of Public Administration degree from Columbus State University. Chief Sanford is also a graduate of the Georgia Law Enforcement Command College (Class 46), and the FBI National Academy (242nd Session). He is a graduate of Leadership Calhoun-Gordon County (Gordon County Chamber of Commerce). Chief Sanford currently serves as the President of the Georgia Chapter of the FBI National Academy Associates (FBINAA). He also serves on the FBINAA National Officer Safety and Wellness Committee, the Executive Board of FBI Georgia LEEDS and the Criminal Justice Advisory Board of Thomas University. In addition to his law enforcement career, Chief Sanford is an Adjunct Instructor for Reinhardt University teaching in the Bachelor of Criminal Justice program.

Chief Sanford was born and raised in Gordon County, Georgia. He and his wife, Raina are proud parents of three adult children and one grandson. Chief Sanford’s son, Brent is also a law enforcement officer, serving as a State Trooper with the Georgia State Patrol in the Atlanta Metro area.
